Viking Unst for Schools

Current Activities
- We have recently completed a project with Baltasound School using Archaeology to teach the new Curriculum for Excellence. This project involved the creation and excavation of a 5x2m trench in the grounds of the school, accompanied by all the appropriate excavation planning, finds recording and site illustration. Given the success of this trial year we hope to repeat the excercise in 2009.
- A number of schools have already engaged in visits both to our archaeological sites, and to the Skidbladner longship.
- Many schools in Shetland choose to cover Viking topics around the time of Up-Helly-Aa. We have helped to bring the subject to life with object handling sessions in the classroom.
- Following on the success of our archaeological 'practice trench' at Hamar, which was enjoyed by both school children and site visitors in the summer, we have developed a mobile 'dig box' that can be taken to schools throughout Shetland to let children try being an archaeologist for themselves! If your school would be interested in using this exciting resource please get in touch.
